Study design.
- Design
- Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
- Participants
- 180 adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis
- Intervention
- Maxicuma® at 100 or 250 mg a day, or placebo, for 90 days
- Measured
- Pain (VAS), WOMAC scores (total, stiffness and physical function) and a treadmill walk test, at days 30, 45, 60 and 90
Key outcomes.
The results.
Significant from day 30 at both doses. *p < 0.0001 vs placebo.
Significant from day 30 at both doses. *p < 0.0001 vs placebo.
Lower stiffness score at both doses from day 30. *p < 0.001 vs placebo.
Improved mobility at both doses. *p < 0.0001 vs placebo.
Also measured.
In a preclinical study, published in Sage Journals:
- Antioxidant support: higher serum SOD and catalase.
- Cartilage support: lower cartilage oligomeric matrix protein and glycosaminoglycans, and higher COL2A1.
- Joint health support: lower MMP3 and MMP7, proteins involved in the metabolism of joint tissue.
- Anti-inflammatory support: lower COX-2, PGE2, C-reactive protein and IL-10.
Single-dose and 28-day repeated-dose toxicity studies found Maxicuma® safe at the human equivalent dose, published in the Journal of Biologically Active Products from Nature.
No clinically meaningful safety concerns: safe for use.
